Newcastle United are firm favourites to secure the signing of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere in January, according to the latest bookmakers’ odds.
Betting agency Ladbrokes have priced the Magpies at 7/4 to be the 25-year-old’s next club before the end of the winter window, with Crystal Palace sitting as second favourites on odds of 3/1.
Fellow Premier League sides West Ham (10/3) and Everton (7/2) are also said to be in the running for his signature, while Italian giants AC Milan are named at 5/1 outsiders in the hunt for the midfield maestro.
Newcastle saw just one central midfielder through the doors in the summer transfer market, with Spanish youngster Mikel Merino arriving on an initial season-long loan deal to join Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame in battling for a role in the middle of the park.
Wilshere, who has been something of a sick note during his career with several major and minor injury layoffs, remained at Arsenal for the first half of the campaign despite being linked with a move away in summer, having spent part of last season on loan to Bournemouth.
He has worked his way up from bit part player to starting each of the Gunners’ last two league games, with a total of 16 appearances across all competitions under his belt, nine of which have come in the starting line up.
His contract with the north London club is set to expire in the summer of 2018, leaving him free to sign a pre-contract deal with another club come the opening of the January window.
In other Newcastle United news, a Sky Sports journalist has delivered a positive update on the club’s takeover talks.
