Betting update: Aston Villa second favourites to sign ex-player after reported Bruce interest

Aston Villa are in the running to sign Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing, according to the latest bookmaker odds.
Leading bookmaker Sky Bet have the 32-year-old at odds of 8/1 to return to his former club after reported interest from Steve Bruce.
The Birmingham Mail claimed on Monday that the Villa manager is interested in signing the winger as he looks to improve his squad during the January transfer window.
Sky Sports revealed on their official Twitter account that Downing would be allowed to leave Aitor Karanka’s side on loan until the end of the season.

Villa are second favourites to sign the ex-Liverpool and West Ham player, although a long way short of Premier League outfit Crystal Palace, who are priced odds-on at 2/7 to complete the transfer.

Sunderland and West Ham come in at odds of 16/1, while Villa’s second city rivals, Birmingham are 18/1 to sign the former England international.
If Downing were to re-join Villa then he would be tasked to help the Midlands giants secure instant promotion back to the top-flight.
He last played for the club in 2011 where he went on to make a £19 million transfer move to Merseyside club Liverpool.
During his time at Villa, Downing played 79 games in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and supplying 14 assists.
This season for Boro, he has played 19 Premie League, EFL Cup and FA Cup games, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
