'Put Bid in for Haaland' - Exclusive: Newcastle touted to make sensational signing
Kevin Phillips has urged Newcastle United to make a sensational statement signing like Erling Haaland if the prospective takeover is completed.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the likes of Edinson Cavani would only be a “quick fix” and a younger striker should be preferred.
According to ESPN, the 33-year-old PSG forward is a summer target along with Dries Mertens and Willian.
Paperwork is being finalised by the Premier League ahead of the PCP Capital Partners, a Saudi-backed consortium’s, £300million takeover of the club.
The Uruguay international will be available on a free transfer this summer with his current contract expiring at the end of June.
When asked by Football Insider if he thought the experienced goalscorer would be a smart signing at St. James Park, Phillips said: “For one season maybe.

“I was talking about him coming to the Premier League in January and I think Manchester United were interested in taking him on loan. I said that was a no brainer but long-term, probably not. It is a quick fix.
“If you are rebuilding a side you want a player that is going to be there for five or six years.
“If Newcastle are serious and they have mega-cash why not be ambitious and put a bid in for somebody like a Haaland? That would be a proper statement. I am not sure if the lad would want to go there but it would be a statement of intent.
“Cavani would be short-term, a season. I would prefer for them to go for someone with a bit of longevity.”
Cavani has been a prolific goalscorer throughout his career, scoring 341 goals in 556 appearances in club football.
