Danny Mills has suggested that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is still not convinced by Eddie Nketiah’s ability to start a Championship game after coming off the bench against Derby County.
The former Leeds and England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that he feels there is a certain quality lacking from the striker’s game and that the Argentine boss looks to feel the same.
The Arsenal loanee has not started once in the Championship this season, with all his league appearances coming as a substitute – including against the Rams on Saturday afternoon.
Mills says that while the centre-forward is netting goals from the bench, having scored against Brentford and Barnsley in his Championship outings, he still appears to be lacking a certain poise in his game.
Mills told Football Insider: “Yet again on the bench, I’ve seen him a lot – watched him four or five times live now this season- and I still think there’s just something, he doesn’t look sharp enough, his touch at times.
“I know he’s scored a lot of goals coming off the bench but when I’ve seen him starting, there’s just something that says, and Bielsa clearly sees it as well, he’s not quite ready to play that 90 minutes.”
The points were shared at Elland Road on Saturday, an own goal from Derby cancelled out by Chris Martin’s injury time strike, Mateusz Klich missing a penalty in the second-half.
The Whites’ next game sees them take on Charlton next weekend, the Addicks lingering near the top of the table after promotion from League One last season.
