Noel Whelan has claimed Marcelo Bielsa will be concerned about the form of Ezgjan Alioski and may take the rare step of axing him from the Leeds United side tomorrow night.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward explained why the Macedonia international, 27, is an increasing worry at left-back.
Barry Douglas started the first three league matches of the season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side before injury handed Alioski a chance.
The converted winger, 27, has started the last six Championship matches for the promotion hopefuls but Whelan believes that run could end in tomorrow’s home clash against West Brom.
“He took him off at half-time against Charlton to go to three at the back and that tells you Bielsa wasn’t happy with him,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Alioski has great energy and will run all day but, when it comes to defending, he goes to ground and sells himself too often.
“Bielsa is worried about him in defensive situations. He should be, as Barry Douglas is a better defender and a proven left-back.
“Alioski has plenty to offer and you always get 100 per cent from him, but Bielsa may be thinking the West Brom game is the ideal time for a change, with the matches coming thick and fast.
“We know Bielsa doesn’t like to rotate or make changes, but it’s an obvious decision to make.”
Alioski has been a key player for Leeds since signing in 2017, but most of his 101 appearances for the club have come in wide attacking roles.
He has made nine appearances this season, scoring in the 3-0 win over Stoke City.
