'Big signing for Spurs' - Exclusive: Brown raves about £27m centre-mid deal agreed

Michael Brown has hailed Giovani Lo Celso as a “big signing” after establishing himself as a key man for Tottenham in central midfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs midfielder is in no doubt that the Argentine is a real talent who deserves a major role in Jose Mourinho’s side.

Lo Celso initially struggled to make an impression in north London after signing on a loan-to-buy deal from Real Betis last summer.

But the versatile operator is starting to find his feet and has produced a string of impressive displays in central midfield.

Tottenham opted to exercise their option to sign Lo Celso for £27million in January after making an initial loan payment of £15m last summer.

“Big deal, big signing for Spurs, you see straight away Jose Mourinho wanted to make that permanent and he’s slotted in,” Brown told Football Insider.

“I’m not sure who’s the best central midfielder combination, who he’s going to sit, how he’s going to play because they’ve played with a back five, didn’t work one bit, it was like they hadn’t even worked on it.

“It’s like, where does Lo Celso go, what’s the system, where’s the identity? Does he sit next to Winks, no Sissoko, does he play up one?

“I’m not quite sure, I don’t think they’ve got the correct way so that will be the one thing
where is his key position.”

Lo Celso has been used in central midfield alongside Winks as Mourinho tries out a series of combinations in that area of the pitch.

He has started five of Spurs’ last six Premier League games in central midfield and now has seven league starts among 25 appearances in all competitions for the club.
