Bayern Munich have a “crush” on Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, according to Bild.
The Bundesliga heavyweights are said to be eyeing the 22-year-old as a possible replacement for Xabi Alonso.
German newspaper Bild reported on Wednesday that Dier’s performances for Spurs this season in a midfield anchorman role have impressed Bayern.
The Bundesliga leaders were impressed by Dier’s displays in his team’s recent Europa League tie against Borussia Dortmund at White Hart Lane, even though Spurs lost 2-1 and exited the competition.
Dier signed a new Tottenham contract last September, but Bild claim Bayern have a “crush” on the England international and he will now be watched closely by the club as they plan for the future.
Alonso, 34, is out of contract next year, although the veteran midfielder was on the bench as Pep Guardiola’s side beat Benfica 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday night. Arturo Vidal and Thiago were selected to start in central midfield ahead of Alonso.
Dier’s reputation has been enhanced since he was moved from centre-back into midfield by Mauricio Pochettino at the start of the season.
He has started 31 of Spurs’ 32 Premier League fixtures and has played more minutes in all competitions this season than any other player in the team.
The balance he brings to the side allows more creative players like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to shine, while also giving full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose the freedom to race forward regularly.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the Londoners are eyeing two more Belgian stars as they make plans that could increase their Belgium quota to six next season.
