Darren Bent has questioned whether West Ham defender Ryan Fredericks is of the quality required for the Premier League.

The former England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he was shocked when the former Fulham man swapped the Cottagers for the Irons last summer and that the 26-year-old has not done enough to convince in the top flight.

Fredericks was named among starting XI in the Hammers’ opening game of the season, with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City thrashing Manuel Pellegrini’s men 5-0.

Bent has admitted he is not certain about the former Cottager’s abilities in the top flight, suggesting he does not have faith in his defensive capabilities.

Bent told Football Insider: “Fredericks I’m not so sure about. He had that stint at Fulham and when he got that move to Fulham it was a bit of an eye-raiser, a bit of a shocker, going: ‘Oh wow, they’ve signed him,’ because they’ve obviously seen something in him.

“Defensively on his side, defensively not the strongest.”

Fredericks has made 19 appearances for the Hammers since his move across London, having seen injury and the form of others curtail his playing time last season.

The Irons’ next game sees them take on Brighton away from home, the Seagulls hoping to replicate the performance and result of their 3-0 win over Watford.
