'Killer' - Exclusive: Darren Bent reacts to £10m+ reported Newcastle transfer development

Darren Bent claims that Jetro Willems’ injury setback may have dealt a “bitter blow” to his chances of a future at Newcastle United.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says he was impressed with the left-back during his loan spell from Eintracht Frankfurt.

German publication Bild report that the Magpies are unlikely to trigger their £10million-plus (€11million) option to buy the 25-year-old, with his injury set to keep him out until early 2021.

Willems ruptured his cruciate ligament in the win over Chelsea in January, leaving him sidelined for at least the rest of the season.

Bent admits that a lengthy injury layoff puts his future up in the air but says he would like to see the defender back at St James’ Park.

Asked about Willems’ chances of a permanent deal, Bent told Football Insider: “It’s a bit of a killer because I thought he did quite well before he got injured.

“I thought he did alright, scored some great goals, especially on his right foot, the one against Liverpool. It’s a bitter blow for him.

“Newcastle this season have been unlucky with injuries, I think. They’ve had injuries to Saint-Maximin, he’s been out for a while, it’s been a bit of an awkward time for them.

“We wish him all the best, hopefully once he gets himself fit there might be the opportunity for the two clubs to do a bit more business and bring him back to St James’. Obviously the most important thing now is about recovery.”

Willems played a total of 20 times for the Magpies before his layoff, scoring two goals.

Manager Steve Bruce brought Danny Rose in on loan in January to cover for the Dutch international’s absence.

In other Newcastle United news, Alan Hutton has dropped a reveal about Bruce amid a £12million transfer hunt.
