Bournemouth v Newcastle

Live on BT Sport 1
Bournemouth
Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Southampton made it four straight defeats for Bournemouth and seven games in all competitions without a win.
‘Cruel injuries to key players’ has been the popular rhetoric of most pre-match amble surrounding the Cherries for the last few weeks. But it’s time Eddie Howe’s men stopped feeling sorry for themselves and start figuring out a way to pick up points in this division again. If they don’t, then they’ll quickly find themselves in an extremely tricky situation.
As things stand, their early season results and the poor form of others means that Bournemouth still have their heads above the parapet, and whilst that remains the case they can go into games like this with intent and purpose. It’s still early days, but avoiding defeat here and staying out of the relegation zone could turn out to be significant in the long-term.
Team News: Tommy Elphick, Max Gradel, Tyrone Mings and Callum Wilson all remain long-term absentees due to injury, while Artur Boruc is unlikely to play regardless of whether or not he recovers from a thigh injury given his poor performance against Spurs recently.
Newcastle
Newcastle’s response to their 3-0 derby defeat was commendable, despite only managing a 0-0 draw at home to Stoke last weekend. The Magpies had the majority of clear-cut opportunities and but for an inspired performance from Potters keeper Jack Butland they would have taken all three points.
The draw was only Newcastle’s second clean sheet of the season but another two dropped points mean the Magpies stay in the relegation zone, one point behind today’s opponents.
Form away from St James’ Park is a major problem for Newcastle, who have now lost 10 and won none of their last 11 fixtures on the road. Unless they can find a way of picking up points away from home they’re likely to find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle for the majority of this campaign.
Team News: Goalkeeper Rob Elliot is rated as doubtful and if unavailable would see Newcastle seek permission to bring in a replacement on an ’emergency loan’ deal. Jack Colback is out for six weeks following the knee injury he sustained at the Stadium of Light.
Match Odds
I couldn’t be overly confident about backing either of these two sides in the Match Odds market given their respective recent form. The ‘gun to head’ bet would have to be Newcastle at an underdogs price of 3.40, however.
I’m not sure that Bournemouth are a genuine 2.30 chance to beat any team in the Premier League given their injury problems and Laying the hosts is an equally good value bet.
Over/Under 2.5 Goals
Newcastle have scored only one goal in four away games this season, while Bournemouth haven’t scored more than once in any of their last seven fixtures and have drawn blanks on each of their last two outings.
The Cherries’ troubles this season are going to stem largely from a lack of goals, having been heavily reliant on Callum Wilson before his injury. All things considered, Under 2.5 Goals looks a steal at odds of 2.06.
Shown a Card?
Aleksandar Mitrovic is an obvious talent. But if he can’t learn to curb his fiery temper then he’s going to struggle to progress his career. What use is a striker that spends large parts of the season missing due to suspension?
Including games played for Serbia this season he has now picked up six yellow cards and one red in just 14 appearances.
He got himself involved in tangles with Ryan Shawcross and Philipp Wollscheid at the weekend against Stoke, eventually earning another booking, and at odds of around 3.40 to be carded here he simply has to be backed.
Recommended Bets
2pts Back Under 2.5 Goals @ 2.06
1pt Back Aleksandar Mitrovic to be shown a card @ 3.40
