Tottenham surely regret selling Luka Vuskovic, the data shows he's a future superstar

Tottenham's regret at selling Luka Vuskovic must have increased after his starring role in Brighton's win over Man United.

Spurs allowed Vuskovic to leave in the summer following his standout loan spell at Hamburg.

The Croatia international shone in the Bundesliga but was not deemed to be a key part of Roberto De Zerbi's plans for this campaign.

He was sold to Brighton for a club-record fee of £46million in July after handing in a transfer request, which looks to be one of the signings of the summer right now.

Vuskovic put in another stellar performance for the Seagulls in their 3-2 win over Man United on Wednesday night to prove that he could have been a real asset to Spurs this season.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have won just one of six competitive games this season, and none of De Zerbi's centre-backs have impressed so far.

Vuskovic scored six goals from centre-back in 30 appearances for Hamburg to win a nomination for the Bundesliga Player of the Season award.

He failed to ever even make a competitive appearance for Spurs in his three years contracted to the club and was not given a chance in pre-season after returning from the World Cup.

Brighton sit fifth in the top flight and are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with Vuskovic making seven appearances across all competitions so far.

The 19-year-old provided an assist for Pascal Gross to level the scores against Man United on Wednesday night, while having the most touches of any Brighton player as they battled back to win at Old Trafford.

Vuskovic made two tackles, interceptions and clearances each, while he also recovered the ball seven times.

The 19-year-old also won three of five ground duels and two of three aerial duels, effectively marking both Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee out of the game.

He would surely be a regular starter for Spurs right now, and their mistake is proving obvious as De Zerbi's job comes under pressure.

Vuskovic could return to Tottenham after 'smart' clause

Jan-Paul van Hecke joined Spurs from Brighton in a separate deal, but has also struggled to make his mark so far, particularly compared to Vuskovic's impact on the south coast.

The Croatian defender made it clear that he was keen to leave North London in the summer, despite the club viewing him as a future superstar, and they did insert a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal. 

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has revealed to Football Insider that Spurs also inserted a “matching clause” as part of their agreement with the Seagulls, giving them the right to compete with any bids that come in for him in future. 

Vuskovic may well end up back at Spurs sooner rather than later, with the latest evidence showing that they should regret allowing him to leave.
