Aston Villa manager Dean Smith exclaims

Michael Brown has admitted Emiliano Martinez “looks like a brilliant signing” for Aston Villa this season.

The former Leeds and Tottenham midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has insisted the 28-year-old’s performance against Manchester United deserved more than the eventual 2-1 defeat for Dean Smith’s side.

Martinez was in fine form against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as he made seven saves to keep the Villans in with a shout of snatching something from the game.

He also showed his ability in possession with 45 touches of the ball, over double that of David de Gea and only 24 less than Paul Pogba, who had the most for the home side [WhoScored].

A close-range header from Anthony Martial opened the scoring on Friday night before Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to ensure the three points remained at Old Trafford.

Despite the defeat, Brown has lauded the performance and overall form of the Villa shot-stopper this season.

“He’s going so well, he’s got that confidence and it just looks like a brilliant signing,” Brown told Football Insider.

“It looks like Aston Villa, if they’d have gone on and got something, which at one point you’re thinking they could have, would have had him to thank.

“I think he’s done really great this season.”

Martinez has managed to keep eight clean sheets in the Premier League this season, the most of any goalkeeper, while only Manchester City and Tottenham have conceded fewer goals than Villa.

The Villans’ next game sees them take on Liverpool in the FA Cup next Friday in what is the first meeting since Smith’s men thrashed the Reds 7-2 earlier this season.
