'What he brings is Huge' - Bruce Exclusive: Leeds player reminds me of Liverpool superstar

Patrick Bamford brings a “huge” amount to Leeds United and his impact on the team is akin to Roberto Firmino at Liverpool.

That is according to ex-Leeds defender Alex Bruce, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about how valuable the much-criticised striker is to Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Bamford has been a virtual ever-present in United’s team this season while they have taken the Championship by storm.

His mixed finishing record and goal output has led to criticism from some quarters, most notably Leeds supporters claiming he should have doubled his 13-goal league tally for the campaign.

Asked if Bamford had a knack of silencing the doubters, Bruce told Football Insider: “Yes, he does.

“You might not get the goals you want from a number nine, a little bit like Firmino for example. However, what he brings to the team is huge and when you watch him live you see what impact he has on the team.

“I’ve said it a few times, I remember a few years ago, our best player was Sone Aluko when we got promoted. He wasn’t an out and out goalscorer but he brought so much to the team in terms of creating space for others, creating chances.

“He got eight goals that season, Sone, and we got automatic promotion. Bamford strikes me as someone who has a similar impact.”

Bamford has made 35 Championship starts among 38 appearances for Leeds this season and had the complete faith of manager Marcelo Bielsa despite the high-profile striker signings of Jean-Kevin Augustin and Eddie Nketiah.
