Alex Bruce claims that Leeds United may have unearthed another gem in young midfielder Jamie Shackleton.
The former Leeds defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he has been left head over heels with the 20-year-old’s performances in recent weeks.
Shackleton netted two goals in the final two games of the season as he started against Derby County and came off the bench versus Charlton Athletic.
He has been a fringe player all season for Bielsa and made just five league starts in 22 appearances.
However, having been awarded increased playing time following the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League, Bruce believes the Whites have got a real gem on their hands.
Speaking after the youngster’s goalscoring cameo against Charlton, Bruce told Football Insider: “What a great thing to do, I mean there’s nothing better than a young lad coming through when you’re from the area and to come and grab his opportunity.
“By the way, the performances that he has put in the last few weeks have been excellent as well. That’ll be a nice addition to the squad, for sure.
“If they lose one star in the lad (Ben White) going back to Brighton, they might just have unearthed another one in Shackleton.”
Shackleton has a total of 48 appearances under his belt for Leeds, although the majority of those have come as short cameos from the substitutes’ bench.
He has also played three times for the England under-20s.
In other Leeds United news, Bruce claims the Whites have been dealt a “kick in the teeth” as fee agreed over exit.
