Bruce delivers update on Sam Johnstone starting v Tottenham

By Emma Sanders

Steve Bruce claims he is yet to make a decision on whether new signing Sam Johnstone will make his debut in Aston Villa’s FA Cup clash against Tottenham on Sunday.

The two teams go head-to-head in the third round of the FA Cup and Bruce could hand a first start to Johnstone who has joined Aston Villa on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season.

Johnstone was Jose Mourinho’s third choice keeper behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero but he has joined Villa to gain regular first-team action.

Bruce insisted he intends to use Johnstone this season and if he does not start against Tottenham, he will likely line-up for his debut against Wolves the week after.

“He has only trained on Thursday so far, so I have it in my mind ‘is he ready for Sunday?’ Is that fair on him? Or do we let him train with the boys and get used to his surroundings for the next 10 days ahead of Wolves,” said Bruce, as quoted by the International Business Times.

“I will see how he is and see what he thinks. Whether I throw him in against Spurs… I am yet to decide. But certainly I have brought him here to play.”

The 23-year-old is yet to make an appearance for United after being with the club for almost six years but he could feature on Sunday despite only joining Villa on Thursday.

Johnstone clearly has plenty of potential and will be relishing the opportunity to play on a weekly basis under Bruce in the Championship.
