Bruno Fernandes 'could have broken' 22-year-old's leg as Man United controversy analysed - pundit

Kevin Campbell is adamant Man United midfielder Bruno Fernandes should have been sent off against Arsenal for his challenge on Nuno Tavares.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker said Fernandes, 27, could have broken Tavares’ leg with his tackle.

Fernandes was under the spotlight for a high tackle on Tavares, 22, in the second half of Arsenal’s 3-1 win over the Red Devils on Saturday.

However, as analysed and shown on Sky Sports (25 April), referee Craig Pawson only booked the United midfielder and VAR chose not to intervene.

Campbell was left fuming by the officials decision not to send off the Portugal international.

“I have seen some challenges this season that don’t warrant red cards but have got them,” he told Football Insider.

“Nobody can tell me that Fernandes should not have been sent off there. He was like British Rail… He was that late.

“I don’t want the referee to spoil the occasion by sending players off but the fact of the matter is he could have broken his leg. It was that dangerous.

“The fact is was only a yellow is a joke. I have seen players sent off for a lot, lot less.

“Is it the referee, is it VAR? I give up. The referee was right there and he did not give it. Pawson bottled it. He bottled it because it is Fernandes and Man United.”
