Bruno Guimaraes will reject Real Madrid to become Newcastle 'legend' - pundit

Bruno Guimaraes will turn down Real Madrid to stay with Newcastle United.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ new hero.

Spanish publication AS have reported (21 April) that Real Madrid have identified Guimaraes as a transfer target for 2023, as they look to refresh their midfield options.

The 24-year-old Brazil international joined Newcastle from Olympique Lyonnais in January and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract.

He has so far scored three goals and chipped in with one assist in 12 Premier League appearances.

McAvennie has been blown away by what he’s seen.

“The boy Bruno is just brilliant,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I remember thinking he was a defensive midfielder when Newcastle signed him but he’s scored himself a few goals as well which is great for him.

“He is brilliant to watch and it is weird to see a Newcastle player linked with Real Madrid.

“The way Newcastle are going, he will turn that down if an offer comes in because they will be right up there in a few years.

“If he helps to take Newcastle to the Champions League then he will be a legend.

Guimaraes initially struggled for game time at Newcastle due to the form of Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton and Joe Willock in the midfield.

He played 90 minutes as the Magpies lost 1-0 to Liverpool at St James’ Park on Saturday (30 April).
