Bryan Mbeumo: Man United could sign ‘replacement’ amid new concerns

Bryan Mbeumo has suffered a dip in his form for Manchester United recently and could find himself replaced in Michael Carrick’s side this summer.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a fast start to life at Old Trafford after his £71million move from Brentford last season, but his recent displays have led to concerns emerging.

Currently, he is competing for a place in the side with both Benjamin Sesko and Amad Diallo, but there are plans to bring in a new winger this summer.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that United are assessing their squad and Mbeumo’s recent form could raise questions over his future.

With their managerial situation also rumbling on in the background and a permanent appointment to be made, Man United are preparing for a busy window.

Could Man United look to replace Bryan Mbeumo?

Brown told Football Insider last month that Man United are concerned about Mbeumo after what has proved to be a tricky run of form despite the team’s success.

The Cameroon international last found the net against Tottenham in February, and his last assist came against Everton later that month before hitting a dry spell.

His lack of attacking involvements in recent weeks have raised concerns, and with new signings being lined up, he could find himself being replaced.

“I’ve heard a couple of names of wingers they’re interested in,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They’re assessing their squad and that’s somewhere they feel they want to improve.

“I don’t find that surprising, and in fact I would be surprised if they weren’t looking in that position, because they’ve had some concerns about their wide options.

“Bryan Mbeumo’s form has been tailing off a bit for about 10 games, and that’s a problem.

“He’s still been in the team under Carrick, but Amad hasn’t done too much to put pressure on him, to be fair, when he’s been called upon.

“The problem I think Man United have, is that when they play with Mbeumo, Sesko, and [Matheus] Cunha, they haven’t got a natural wide player in the side.

“Everybody wants to drift through the middle, and it means they lack width. So a new signing to come in and replace Mbeumo could be something they look for.

“Mbeumo needs to step up his performances and show what he had shown when he first came in with that pace and goalscoring ability he has.

“If he keeps struggling, it’s going to be even more of a concern for United, and better competition might mean he finds himself out of the team.”

Which wingers are on Man United’s radar?

Ahead of a the summer transfer window, Man United have set their sights on a number of potential targets as they aim to bolster their squad out wide.

While the addition of a new left-sided winger is their main target, somebody with the talent to play on both sides would be ideal, and could cause problems for Mbeumo.

Brown told Football Insider on 28 April that Man United are closely watching Mika Godts, the 20-year-old Ajax winger who is enjoying a fantastic season.

Scouts have been sent to watch the winger in action in recent weeks, alongside those from a number of their Premier League rivals thanks to his impressive form.

Godts is left-footed and able to play on both flanks, having already made over 100 senior appearances despite his age, and has provided 29 goal contributions this season.
