Adam Virgo has revealed he would have chosen Leeds’ Chris Wood for Championship Player of the Year after a sublime season in front of goal.
The EFL chose Brighton’s Anthony Knockaert over 27-goal Wood, while Newcastle’s goal machine Dwight Gayle also missed out on the award.
Former Brighton and Celtic defender Virgo claimed on his personal Twitter account that he would have picked Wood because the New Zealand international has been “outstanding”.
Knockaert has proven to be Brighton’s biggest creative influence this season, providing nine assists for the Seagulls as well as scoring 13 goals as they sit top of the Championship.
Wood has taken his tally to a huge 27 goals in all competitions, with 24 of those strikes coming in the league as he continues to fire the Whites to potential promotion.
However, Wood was not among the goals on Saturday, as Doukara, Pablo Hernandez and Kemar Roofe all scored in a 3-0 win over Preston at Elland Road.
Former Leicester striker Wood is expected to start up front once again for Monk’s side on Good Friday, as Leeds travel to St. James’ Park to face Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle.
