Bukayo Saka: Pundit issues 'big' verdict on Arsenal tabling £200k-a-week deal after journalist's update
Bukayo Saka will be offered “a big rise” on his current deal by Arsenal, according to Kevin Campbell.
However, the former Highbury favourite, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old will not be put up there with the club’s top earner Thomas Partey.
Saka’s current deal at the Emirates expires in the summer of 2024.
According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein (21 March), Arsenal have held initial conversation over extending his deal.
The winger has been one of Mikel Arteta’s side’s standout performers this season, with 15 goal contributions to his name.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Saka deserved to be made one of the club’s top earners, Campbell said:
“Saka deserves a new deal but he doesn’t deserve to be up there with Thomas Partey. Look, he is a young, talented player but he is not on that level yet.
“I don’t know what he is earning now but he will get a big rise. It will be significant, I’m sure.
“Saka will not be one of the top earners at the club though. He needs to do a bit more to earn that.
“He is doing so well that he has earned a new contract and if continues on this trajectory he will earn another new deal. That is the way it has to work. You don’t just make a young, gifted player the top earner. You only get that if you do crazy things.
“We have seen Arsenal hand out these big contracts in the past to their detriment. It has been a problem. I think they will take a more clever approach with Saka.”
According to the Mirror (22 March), Thomas Partey is Arsenal’s highest earner.
He earns a reported £200,000-a-week.
