Burnley failed with a late attempt to sign Swansea City star Zan Vipotnik on transfer deadline day, sources have told Football Insider.

The Clarets made an offer for the striker following Zian Flemming's £20million move to Ipswich Town, but saw their bid dismissed out of hand.

The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium throughout the summer window, but ultimately remained as part of Vitor Matos' side.

Vipotnik was last season's top scorer in the Championship and had attracted interest from a number of clubs both in the second tier, Premier League, and across Europe.

The Slovenia international scored 23 goals in 44 Championship games last term, but has yet to find the net this season amid ongoing speculation about his future.

Swansea were always reluctant to lose Vipotnik, who is under a long-term contact until 2030, and refused to entertain offers for him so late in the summer window.

Why did Burnley target Zan Vipotnik?

Football Insider revealed back in April that Swansea were set to demand as much as £15million for Vipotnik, but that fee is believed to have risen later in the window.

The likes of Brighton and Sporting CP both considered moves for the striker this summer, but ultimately eyed other options, and Burnley were the final club to make a move.

Vipotnik's goalscoring record in the second tier made him the ideal replacement for Flemming, who scored 11 Premier League goals despite Burnley's relegation last time out.

The addition of a natural goalscorer became a late priority for the Clarets, but after their offer was rebuffed by Swansea, they were left without a replacement for their main man.

Vipotnik, meanwhile, will remain at Swansea in a significant boost to their ambitions for the season after a strong start which has put them top of the league after four games played.

How did Ipswich Town land Zian Flemming?

Flemming's departure came as a blow to Burnley on transfer deadline day, but was not a surprise given the level of interest and talks held behind the scenes before the move.

A number of clubs across Europe and in the Premier League had plotted moves to sign the striker, including French outfit Lille, who saw multiple offers rejected.

Football Insider revealed on 31 August that Ipswich Town were prepared to rival Lille in their pursuit of Flemming and had made a formal offer to sign the Burnley striker.

Gary O'Neil's side have been impressed by the Dutchman in the last 12 months after he scored 11 Premier League goals in 29 appearances last season.

They eventually reached an agreement on deadline day, in a blow to Burnley's plans, but Ipswich are believed to be happy with their business.
