Rangers flop Carlos Pena has claimed former Gers manager Pedro Caixinha knew about his problems with alcohol during his time in Scotland – after checking into a rehab facility in Mexico to get help with his issues.
The 28-year-old joined the Gers last summer but only made 14 appearances before being shipped out on loan to Cruz Azul in January – where Caixinha had taken over following his Rangers dismissal a few months earlier.
The former international also claimed that he wants to be the “best midfielder in Mexico again” when he completes his treatment.
“Pedro Caixinha knew about my issues, we were together for six months in Scotland so he was aware of my situation,” Pena said in an interview on Mexican TV, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“I want to cleanse myself, that’s why I have come here. I have a problem and I still have it, but I am getting treatment for it.
“The people here are wonderful. I have heard some incredible stories.
“They have made me feel valued again.
“I want to come out of this and be the best midfielder in Mexico again.”
Football Insider verdict:
If Caixinha knew Pena had problems before he brought him to Ibrox it seems utterly crazy that he would pluck the midfielder from his homeland and take him thousands of miles away to a new environment where he can’t speak the language and has never experienced the climate. It would, however, explain the apparent fitness problems Pena was having during his time in Scotland. Despite all that, there were signs of a really talented footballer in there and hopefully, after undergoing treatment, Pena can get his life and career on track. It looks incredibly unlikely he’ll ever appear in Scotland again but stranger things have happened with the Gers in recent years. With his loan deal at Cruz Azul running until the end of the year there’s still a possibility of him getting his act together and impressing there and winning a permanent move – otherwise, it could see the Gers having to come to an agreement with the player to cut his deal short early.
