Cameron Archer backed for Aston Villa exit as family member speaks out - Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Cameron Archer to leave Aston Villa on loan in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted Archer will find it difficult to get ahead of Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings in the pecking order.

The 20-year-old made his first appearance under Unai Emery as Aston Villa beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 on Sunday (13 November) in their final game before the break for the World Cup.

He was left on the bench for the 4-2 loss to Man United in the Carabao Cup last week (10 November) which prompted his brother, Jordan McFarlane-Archer, to Tweet that he should be “freed”.

“It’s very difficult,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Watkins was missing at the weekend because he was ill but Watkins and Ings are going to be first choice. Managers don’t really play two up front.

“With Archer, I like him, but for your own career sometimes you have to be selfish.

“He needs to play football. Go to the Championship and find a club that suits you and go bang in goals.

“I can’t see him getting into the team in front of Watkins and Ings, to be honest.

“At that age, you want to be playing football. You don’t want to be hanging around and getting five minutes here and there, you want to be starting games.

“That’s what he needs to go and do for me.”

Archer scored seven times in 20 Championship games while on loan at Preston North End in the second half of last season.

There were a number of Championship clubs taking him on loan this summer but he stayed at Aston Villa and signed a new five-year contract with the club.
