Cameron Archer: 'Fantastic' loanee tipped for major role at Aston Villa - pundit

Cameron Archer will get an opportunity to impress at Aston Villa following his sparkling start to life at Preston North End, according to Paul Robinson.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 20-year-old could “slot straight back in” to the squad for pre-season at the Midlands side.

Archer joined Preston last month (24 January) on loan for the rest of the season and has already netted two goals in three appearances.

Speaking after his latest strike against Hull City and quoted by the Lancashire Post, (7 January) Deepdale boss Ryan Lowe branded the youngster “fantastic” and insisted he has an “abundance of talent”.

Robinson insisted the Aston Villa backroom staff will be keeping a close eye on Archer.

“I think he can come back into the Villa side,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He’ll get that opportunity under Steven Gerrard, in a similar way to what he did at Rangers with bringing young players through.

“Players at that age and stage in their careers, they go out on loan for a reason.

“You don’t send a player out and stop looking at him. They’ll have coaches and managers watching him week-in, week-out.

“They’ll know exactly how he’s playing and how he’s progressing at Preston.

“At the moment, I can definitely see him slotting straight back into that squad for pre-season in the run-up to next season.”

Archer penned a fresh Aston Villa deal in December 2021, keeping him at the club until 2025.

The Walsall-born starlet netted four goals in two League Cup games this season before his loan exit.
