Campbell: Celtic dressing room reveal 'is very sad to hear'

Kevin Campbell has claimed “it is very sad to hear” Celtic players refused to play when fit last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the “crazy” situation would have never arose in his playing days.

Lennon told The Scottish Sun on October 10th that some Hoops star pulled out of games when fully fit in the 2020-21 campaign.

He suggested those who did brought a toxic atmosphere into the club which “dragged down” senior players like Scott Brown and Callum McGregor.

Celtic’s struggles last season cost Lennon has job.

The 50-year-old resigned as Bhoys manager at the end of February with the Hoops 18-points behind Rangers in the league.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Lennon’s comments, Campbell said:

“I have never been involved at a football club where a player has been fit and has not wanted to play. Never. That is a strange one to me.

“The thing is, the times we are living in now are very different. It is crazy. Players want to protect their value because they are going somewhere else or they have fall outs with the manager.

“In my day, players just wanted to play as much as possible. I am questioning that with the modern footballer. Do these players really want to play every week?

“What Lennon has said is sad to hear. It’s very sad.”
