Campbell excited by 'perfect signing' Tavares after Romano's Arsenal update

Benfica defender Nuno Tavares could be the “perfect signing” for Arsenal this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 21-year-old would be a “cheap” addition for less than £10million.

According to Fabrizio Romano (30 June), Tavares will move to the Emirates for a fee of £6.9million plus add-ons after the paperwork was finalised yesterday.

The London club made a left-back one of their priority signings in this window, with Kieran Tierney the only recognised player in that position in Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Tierney put pen to paper on a new five-year contract with the Gunners last month.

When asked by Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Tavares’s prospective arrival, Campbell said:

“Kieran Tierney has just signed his new contract so he will be the first choice left-back for the foreseeable future but he will not play every game.

“We saw last season that he needs a deputy because of the way he plays. He is crash, bang, wallop in his play style.

“Arteta needs a capable deputy and Tavares sounds like he could be the perfect signing.

“If you can get someone who can do a job there for less than £10million it’s cheap money really.”

Tavares contributed one goal and seven assists in his 41 career appearances for Benfica.

He has also been capped by Portugal at Under-21 level.
