Kevin Campbell is over the moon to hear Kieran Tierney is “in contention” to start for Arsenal against Villarreal tomorrow night.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners striker said the return of the 23-year-old to the starting XI would be a “huge boost” given the threat Samuel Chukwueze possesses for the La Liga side.
Tierney has missed Arsenal’s last five fixtures across all competitions with a knee injury suffered in the 3-0 loss to Liverpool earlier this month.
As quoted by club media, Arteta revealed in his press conference today that the left-back is “in contention” for the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals after “working like a beast” to accelerate his recovery.
Campbell tipped Granit Xhaka to move back into midfield if the Scotland international is passed fit on Thursday.
“It is a huge boost to hear Tierney is back in contention,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“The club have been keeping it really quiet on his rehab.
“He has not played any games of late which is a concern but Villarreal have got a very lively winger in Chukwueze so we might need him.
“Tierney is so influential on the left-hand side that if he is fit enough to start it would be a really big boost for the defence.
“It would also allow Xhaka to move back into the midfield because we need him in there.”
