Campbell in awe of 'hero' Struijk after 'brilliant' Leeds footage emerges

Kevin Campbell has claimed Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk is an “unsung hero” at Elland Road.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker said the 22-year-old has been “brilliant” for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this year “wherever he has been asked to play”.

Struijk started his third consecutive Premier League game on Sunday and, as club footage showed, impressed in a vital 2-1 win over Norwich City.

As quoted by Leeds Live (31st October), Bielsa heaped praise on the Belgian-born defender who has “so many good things” in his game.

Campbell applauded Bielsa for nurturing Struijk’s talent at Elland Road.

“Struijk has been brilliant for them this year wherever he has been asked to play,” he told Football Insider.

“I have to admit I did not know about him when he came to Leeds.

“But, he has been one of the unsung heroes for them in my opinion. I think he is a really consistent performer.

“He is young, aggressive and reads the game well. You have to take your hat off to Bielsa, he has brought him in the first team at the right time.”

Speaking on Struijk, Bielsa said: “He’s a player who has very important conditions. He’s a clear exponent of the type of centre-backs Dutch football creates…

“When he plays on the left of a back three he has to go out wide and does not suffer… That’s so many good things in just one player.”
