Campbell in awe of 'phenomenal' Rice after what he's seen 'live and direct' at West Ham

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice “is the best midfielder in the Premier League”, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is in awe of the rate at which the “phenomenal” 22-year-old is improving.

Rice started for West Ham in Thursday evening’s Europa League clash against Genk.

As revealed by WhoScored (1st November), Rice has only been dispossessed once in the English top flight this season.

The centre-midfielder has contributed a goal and two assists in those 10 appearances.

He has also scored two goals in his first four career Europa League games.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Rice’s form, Campbell said: “Rice is the best midfielder in the Premier League right now, he is.

“I watched him live and direct, very closely at the Everton game. He was miles ahead of everyone else on the pitch.

“United seriously missed a trick last summer. They should have been all over him.

“His performances are only putting the price up though. In the long run, I don’t think West Ham can afford him. He has to go to one of the big boys. He is that good.

“This boy has a huge future ahead of him. Fair play to him because he is improving at a rapid rate. He was good last season but he has been phenomenal this season.”
