West Brom will struggle to keep hold of Matheus Pereira this summer even though Aston Villa’s interest in signing the playmaker is likely to be over.
That is the view of former Arsenal and Albion striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 25-year-old’s future after Villa agreed a deal to sign Emiliano Buendia from Norwich.
The Athletic reported on 26 April that Dean Smith’s side were monitoring Pereira ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the Midlands club announced on Monday they have reached an agreement to sign Argentine number 10 Buendia which more than likely brings to an end any potential interest in Pereira.
However, the well-connected Campbell, whose son Tyrese plays for Stoke City, revealed he has heard Arsenal are interested in signing Pereira as they expand their search for a number 10.
“If West Brom can keep Pereira it would be a huge coup, and he will be a huge coup for whoever he signs, because we know he can be devastating,” he told Football Insider. “He has proven that already.
“He is a top player though and there will be more than just Aston Villa coveting him, especially given that West Brom went down. Teams are going to want to pick their bones.
“I do not think Pereira will be there even though Villa’s interest has likely ended now that they have signed Buendia.
“I‘ve heard from my sources Arsenal want him as well, and of course they are in the market for a number 10. I just cannot see Pereira being there next season.”
