Campbell makes 'big' Tavares claim after 'painful' Arsenal footage emerges

Kevin Campbell fears Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares is “gutted” after a “painful” night at Anfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gunners and Everton striker defended the 21-year-old despite his “elementary mistakes” against Liverpool.

Tavares endured a 90 minutes to forget on Saturday as Jurgen Klopp’s side thrashed Arsenal 4-0 on Merseyside.

As captured by Football.London’s Chris Wheatley, the left-back looked devastated after the full-time whistle blew.

Campbell suggested it was important to remember Tavares was up against Mohamed Salah.

“Tavares is going to be gutted,” he told Football Insider.

“Look, he did not have a great second half. He made a couple of big errors but by and large he did OK. They were elementary mistakes but these things happen.

“He is playing against [Mohamed] Salah – arguably the hottest player in the world right now. For the [Diogo] Jota goal, he robbed Salah of the ball and then got the simple part wrong – passing to a yellow shirt. Sometimes you cannot legislate for that.

“That goal made it a mountain to climb. Arsenal just could not hold out.

“It was painful for Tavares but it should be for everyone. It was a 4-0 defeat.”

Arsenal signed Tavares from Benfica in a near £8million deal at the beginning of July.

The Portuguese full-back has made 11 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side this season.
