Campbell makes emphatic Neco Williams claim after Nottingham Forest transfer news

Kevin Campbell has claimed Neco Williams will remain first choice for Nottingham Forest this season despite the arrival of Serge Aurier.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Forest striker suggested Aurier, 29, will be backup for Williams, 21.

Last Wednesday (7 September), Forest confirmed the signing of former Tottenham defender Aurier on a free transfer.

The Ivory Coast international spent the 2021-22 season on loan with Villarreal before his contract expired.

Aurier becomes Steve Cooper’s 22nd summer signing, a new British record for the most arrivals in a single transfer window.

On 10 July, Forest confirmed the signing of Williams from Liverpool on a four-year deal.

The 21-year-old has impressed while being ever-present for the newly-promoted.

When asked if the Wales international will keep his place in the starting XI after the arrival of Aurier, Campbell told Football Insider: “Yes.

I think Neco has done quite well for Forest to be honest. I think what Forest need, just like a lot of clubs, is competition. Competition is the key. One thing we do know about the Premier League, injuries will come and catch you if you’re not prepared.

I think Nottingham Forest have got two and a half teams with the amount of signings they’ve got. I think Neco Williams will be first choice. If his form drops or he’s injured then there’s a ready made replacement.”
