Kevin Campbell has revealed his admiration for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos and revealed he heard whispers of Newcastle United interest over the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker recognised that the Glasgow giants priced their prize asset out of reach during the last window.
But he also pointed out how Morelos is a “ruthless” goalscorer and he loves how “grumpy” the Colombian gets when he’s misfiring.
Rangers recruitment chief Ross Wilson revealed last month to Rangers TV that the club had an “agreement” with Morelos during the recent transfer window that they would be willing to sell him if they received a bid matching their valuation.
“I think Rangers would have wanted good money for him and clearly teams weren’t willing to spend that kind of money,” Campbell told Football Insider.
“One thing for sure is that he is a goalscorer. I love that he is grumpy when he is not scoring. You have got to be ruthless and he is ruthless.
“Sometimes he gets in altercations but that is what makes him. I’ve heard whispers of
Newcastle before Callum Wilson joined them.
“For the price that was quoted, teams were not convinced.
“Steven Gerrard has got him for another season so he will utilise him and make the most of it because he will play an important role if they are to be successful.”“
Morelos has had a mixed start to the season, scoring seven goals from 16 matches in all competitions and also supplying four assists.
But he has netted in only two of the 10 Scottish Premiership games he has played in, failing to make the team for the other four as Gerrard increasingly makes use of his roster of strikers.
