Campbell 'really surprised' by Arsenal after journalist's £40m Ivan Toney update

Kevin Campbell is “really surprised” Arsenal are not looking to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton goalscorer said the 26-year-old “would be a great alternative” to Mikel Arteta’s current forward options.

According to inews‘ Mark Douglas (18 July), Brentford have slapped a £40million price tag on their star man this summer.

Man United, Newcastle and Leeds have all been credited with an interest in the Englishman.

Toney has three years remaining on his contract at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Campbell believes the ex-Peterborough striker should be of interest to Arsenal, even though Gabriel Jesus arrived from Man City earlier in the window.

“I’ll be honest, I am surprised Arsenal are not looking at Toney,” he told Football Insider.

“I really am surprised because he would be a great alternative. You could put Jesus wide and have Toney play through the middle at times. He could be the target man.

“Away from home that would work well. Or in games at home when teams sit back he would be useful.

“A lot of teams are looking at alternative strikers and there is not many like Toney. He is going to go for a premium.”

Toney enjoyed a successful first full season in the Premier League last year.

He contributed 14 goals and six assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
