Campbell shares bold verdict on Arsenal sacking Arteta after Telegraph reveal

Kevin Campbell has backed under-fire Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta despite Saturday’s 5-0 loss to Manchester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker insisted there has been improvement under the 39-year-old despite their recent poor form.

Arsenal lost 5-0 at the Etihad on Saturday to leave them bottom of the Premier League after three games.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the loss, Arteta apologised to Gooners for the result and vowed to “fix it”.

The north London club have spent over £130million on signings this summer – the most by any English club.

According to The Telegraph (August 23rd), Arteta has until the second international break in October to save his job.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Arsenal had improved under Arteta, Campbell said: “Listen, I understand how things go in this game.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about results and if they don’t go your way you will get sacked. That’s the harsh reality of it.

“But I think there has been some improvement under Arteta.

“There is a problem at Arsenal though that is legacy driven. There has not been the money there to spend in recent years.

“Yes, Arsenal have been the biggest spenders this year but they have not invested wisely enough in the past. We are still playing catch-up. All of the others have consistently recruited well. It is always difficult playing catch-up.

“The signings we’ve made this summer are just players who were needed to allow us to compete.”
