Campbell slams Aubameyang and shares big Arsenal prediction

Arsenal striker Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has been “way off it” in pre-season, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Highbury favourite, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 32-year-old “needs a scruffy goal” to re-ignite his form after a difficult 12 months on the pitch.

Aubameyang failed to score in all six of Arsenal’s pre-season friendlies this year.

It comes after a dismal 2020-21 campaign in which the Gabonese striker scored just 10 goals in 29 Premier League appearances.

But, the club captain is expected to start Friday’s season opener at Brentford despite his poor form.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Aubameyang’s struggles, Campbell said:

“Make no mistake about it, the problem against Spurs was we couldn’t put the ball away.

“A lot of Arsenal fans are worried because Aubameyang looks way off it.

“Alexandre Lacazette and Pepe have looked alright but it is all about Friday though.

“It seems to have gone off like a light switch for Aubameyang. Listen, that is what happens sometimes though.

“He needs a scruffy goal. He needs one to come off his knee or shin and then fly in the goal. If he does that he will be off and running.

“I expect him to do a lot better than he did last season. Arsenal cannot afford for him not to improve. He needs to have have a good season.”
