Kevin Campbell has tipped Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer to shine in the Premier League if signed by Newcastle United this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker claimed the time has come for the 23-year-old to move down to England after four highly-successful years at Parkhead.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are advancing in an £8million move for Ajer ahead of the transfer window opening on 9 June.

The Norway international has just 12 months left on his contract with the Hoops and it is likely the club will cash in this summer if he does not agree to sign a new contract.

Campbell warned Steve Bruce’s side that they will not be the only Premier League club interested in Ajer’s services.

“Ajer has done very well for Celtic over the years,” he told Football Insider. “I think now is the time for him to make the next step.

“He is playing for a massive club in Celtic but he needs to test himself against the best and let’s be honest, to do that he needs to come down to England. The Premier League is the best league in the world.

“I am sure there will be takers for him, it is just a matter of what clubs are willing to pay and where he sees himself.

“I could see him at Newcastle, I think he’d do well there.”

As quoted by Daily Record, Rodgers lauded Ajer while Celtic boss: “He’s a natural leader as a young guy and is improving all the time.

“He’s got a lot of strength and is a quick learner. He’s a bright boy who takes information on very quickly.”
