Campbell verdict on Rangers axing Jon McLaughlin after 'bad' development

Kevin Campbell has backed Jon McLaughlin to keep his place in the Rangers XI despite conceding eight goals in his last two games.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton striker is adamant Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants a younger goalkeeper than Allan McGregor, 40, between the sticks.

McLaughlin‘s position was under scrutiny after an uncharacteristic display at Celtic Park on Saturday (3 September).

The ex-Sunderland shot-stopper conceded four again on Wednesday as Rangers were well beaten by Ajax in the Champions League.

McGregor lost his number one status at Ibrox to McLaughlin at the start of this season.

When asked by Football Insider if McGregor would likely replace McLaughlin when the Gers travel to Aberdeen on Saturday, Campbell said: “Listen, McLaughlin has had a bad week.

“The mistake against Celtic was a bad move at the end of a bad afternoon for Rangers. They were playing out from the back and he made a mistake.

“Should he be dropped? Personally, I think Van Bronckhorst will stick with him. He wants a younger goalkeeper between the sticks, in my opinion.

“McGregor has been a stalwart at the club. He’s been amazing. There has to be a time when a younger goalkeeper comes in though. They have to move on from McGregor at some stage.

“That is what Van Bronckhorst is trying to do. He is trying to move on.”
