Campbell wowed by Van Dijk news coming from Liverpool

Kevin Campbell has claimed it would be the “best signing” Liverpool could make this summer if they tie Virgil van Dijk down to a new £50million-plus deal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and West Brom striker heaped praise on the 29-year-old defender and said he will be a “huge” boost to Jurgen Klopp’s side when he returns from injury later this year.

This site revealed on Friday that the Reds are willing to hand the Netherlands international a deal worth more than £200,000-a-week in a bid to keep him at the club for the rest of his career.

Van Dijk has just over two years remaining on his current contract.

He has missed the majority of the 2020-21 campaign after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Everton in October.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the centre-half’s future, Campbell said:

“Re-signing Virgil van Dijk would be the best signing they could make this summer, without a shadow of a doubt.

“Getting him back in the team is going to be huge for them next season. They have sorely missed him this year.

“It would be great, great business if they can get him tied down to a new long-term deal. It would be the best bit of business they could do all summer.

“He is so, so important to what Liverpool have achieved and what they want to achieve.”
