Former Celtic boss Davie Hay is of the opinion that the Hoops should sign John McGinn in the summer, even though midfield is the strongest part of the side.
Reports from the Scottish Sun claimed that Brendan Rodgers is interested in signing the 23-year-old, and Hay thinks he would be a good addition to the Hoops’ squad.
“Everything depends on Celtic confirming a bid and Hibs being prepared to sell him but I think it is a possibility and I think the boy would come” Hay said, writing in his column in the Evening Times.
“Obviously, if he did arrive, he would face a challenge just to get a first team place…but you can’t have too many good players and I do think he would be a good acquisition.”
Football Insider verdict
The John McGinn saga rolls on and on, as teams continue to posture about making a bid for the midfielder. At least Hay is being sensible in his comments, as the player would find it very difficult to break into a very strong Hoops midfield. That could be the biggest reason why any potential move doesn’t happen, as he might want more first-team football than the Hoops can provide. The posturing will surely end soon enough, and any interested parties will have to firm up their interests in the player with a bid. That is likely to include the Hoops, but if there is any bidding war for the player surely they would be smart enough not to get involved. They don’t actually need McGinn, midfield is crowded enough as it is, but as Hay says, you can never have enough good players in the side. That could well be the attitude that is adopted by Brendan Rodgers, when weighing up a move for McGinn.
In other Celtic news, a reported loan move would do nothing for this Hoops player’s career
