Carragher: This big Liverpool signing has been major let-down but he could change my mind

By Aramide Oladipo

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that German goalkeeper Loris Karius has been the most disappointing of the “big” signings for the club this season.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper was signed by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the 2016 summer transfer window from Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart and the foundations were put in place for the German to become the new number one at the club.

Writing in his column for the Mail, Carragher believes that all of Klopp’s recruitments have been a success apart from the German goalkeeper but he explained that Karius can still turn his Anfield career around.

“Klopp’s idea at the beginning of the campaign was to go with a small squad because of the lack of games and it explains why he ended last summer’s window with a positive net spend. It was a risk – so was not signing anyone in January – but it looks like it may just pay off.

“Part of the reason is the fact that three of his four big signings integrated quickly. Sadio Mane was superb before injury intervened, while Gini Wijnaldum and Joel Matip have both been very good. Loris Karius, the goalkeeper, is the only one with questions to answer but he has time on his side.

Karius didn’t have the best start to the pre-season as he picked up a hand injury which meant that he would miss the beginning of the Premier League season.

The German recovered and he made his first appearance for the club in the 3-0 victory away at Derby County in the EFL Cup.

Following his first clean sheet with the team, Klopp decided to stick with the German in goal but it all turned sour at the beginning of December when Karius was largely to blame for Liverpool’s shock 4-3 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.

Karius also failed to impress in the following match where Liverpool dropped two points at home against West Ham in a 2-2 draw.

It turned out to be Karius’ final Premier League match of the season as he was replaced by Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet who has impressed since his return between the sticks.
