Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has blasted Newcastle United for their signing of striker Joselu during the summer transfer window.
Joselu, 27, arrived at St. James’ Park from Stoke in mid-August after he fell down the pecking order in the Potteries and was deemed as surplus to requirements.
He was shipped out on loan to Deportivo last summer but failed to impress Mark Hughes enough to warrant a stay at the Bet365, prompting Newcastle to come in and swoop for him as Rafa Benitez looked to bolster his attack.
However ex-Liverpool defender Carragher has questioned the signing of the Spanish forward and believes that bringing him in has done nothing to help strengthen the Magpies squad.
“You can’t turn Newcastle into a force if you’re buying players like Joselu, who was a squad player at Stoke who Newcastle are probably going to rival this season, maybe in the bottom half of the table,” he said, as quoted on the Sky Sports website.
“I don’t think there’s any chance of Newcastle going down, just because of the manager. He is very pragmatic and he’ll make it very difficult.”
Joselu has scored just one goal in his opening six appearances for Newcastle across all competitions and he will no doubt want to add to that tally when Benitez faces his old side Liverpool at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
Anfield hero Carragher believes that his old club will be in for a tough game on Tyneside at the weekend even though he has been critical of their summer recruitment policy.
“I don’t think Liverpool have got an easy game going to St James’ at the weekend. You saw how they were against Tottenham before they went down to 10 men,” he added.
“In every game Newcastle have, you’ll very rarely see them lose 4-0 or 5-0, as you might see teams in the bottom half of the table.”
Newcastle were on a three-game winning run before they fell to defeat at the hands of Brighton on Sunday.
They will be looking to bounce back against the Reds but know it will be a tough ask against a Jurgen Klopp side that is firing on all cylinders.
In other Newcastle United news, Joey Barton has delivered a highly controversial verdict on the flashpoint in the loss at Brighton.
