Jamie Carragher has joked on Twitter that his appearance at Everton’s training ground in full kit was key to Romelu Lukaku reportedly rejecting a new contract with the club.
It was widely reported on Tuesday afternoon that Lukaku met with club officials earlier in the day and told them he did not want to sign a fresh deal.
The Belgium international wants to keep his options open rather than sign an extension to his current agreement, which runs until the summer of 2019.
Liverpool legend Carragher took to social media to give his tongue-in-cheek reaction to the bombshell, which will make Everton fans nervous about losing their prize asset at the end of the season.
“I knew putting the Everton training kit on an going to the training ground to have a word with him would be worth it,” said Carragher on his personal Twitter account.

Carragher was referring to a recent feature on Sky Sports with Lukaku in which he caused a stir by donning an Everton training kit.
The former defender was a passionate boyhood Everton fan but his feet are firmly in the red half of Merseyside after switching allegiances to Liverpool following his arrival in their academy and then spending his entire playing career at Anfield.
The prolific Lukaku has struck 20 goals in 29 matches this season and is the joint leading Premier League top scorer with 19.
He was previously said by his agent Mino Raiola to be “99.99 per cent” likely to sign the contract.
The 23-year-old striker has made no secret of his ambition to play in the Champions League and it now appears he wants to see what interest there is from leading clubs in the summer window.
In other Everton news, there is friction at the club between manager Ronald Koeman and director of football Steve Walsh.
