Bolton have issued a statement confirming that they have not heard of any interest in their players after Leeds United were reported to be in the hunt for Josh Vela.
The Daily Mail reported earlier this month that Derby, Brighton and Leeds’ bitter Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday were also interested in Vela, 23, and that cash-strapped Bolton may be forced into selling arguably their most influential player.
It was understood that the attacking midfielder was close to entering the final 18 months of his contract and that Bolton had looked to sell him on to avoid losing him on the cheap.
Phil Parkinson was reported to be keen to keep hold of Vela, and Bolton’s response to reciprocates that approach as they set out to hold a meeting to discuss their plan for January.
“We have had no interest in any of our players and if we did it would not be entertained,” said a spokesperson of the North-West club said, as quoted by Bolton News.
“The manager and the chief scout are meeting today to discuss their plans for next month. We are only interested in bringing players in.”
Vela has made 11 appearances in the Championship this season after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury.
Football Insider verdict
Vela is a very important to Bolton and it’s no wonder that they don’t want to let him leave the Macron Stadium any time soon. Leeds don’t really need another attacking midfielder and it was widely reported on Monday that they have already signed a midfielder. Yosuke Ideguchi is strongly thought to be arriving at Elland Road with a view to him playing a key role next season, so there is no point in the Whites going after Vela. Thomas Christiansen needs defenders before anything else with a left-back being the top priority. It will be interesting to see what else the club does in January because there was so much activity in the summer.
