Whelan blasts Celtic 'board' after 'really weird' Ntcham reveal

There are “strange things happening behind the scenes at Celtic” after Olivier Ntcham left the club following the expiry of his contract.

So says ex-Scottish Premiership forward Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Ntcham’s departure was confirmed by Celtic on 2nd August.

The 25-year-old has been with Celtic for four years but spent the second half of 2020-21 on loan with Marseille.

The Frenchman had a torrid time in Ligue 1 and Marseille elected not to take up their option to buy.

And new Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou recently claimed that Ntcham wanted to revive his career in Scotland.

As per the Daily Record on 10th July, the manager said: “I had chats with him and he said he wanted to come back and make an impression this year.”

And Whelan is mystified that the former Man City man has been allowed to leave on a free.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “It’s really weird because he’s been a very important player for them over the years.

“To allow that to run down and to let him go for free is bad business from the board.

“The way Celtic have been going the last few years, there have been a lot of strange things happening behind the scenes there.

“Now they need to rebuild because they were so far behind Rangers last year.

“We’re seeing the detrimental effect of waiting too long to get a new manager in now. It’s been an absolutely shocking start to the season.
