Celtic could be stripped of Scottish title in extraordinary twist after Hearts match audio analysed – Keith Wyness

Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title victory could yet be taken away from them and awarded to Hearts amid an ongoing enquiry.

That is according to Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the investigation into the way the game ended could still return a positive “outcome” for the Jambos.

The former CEO has suggested that the game was abandoned by referee Don Robertson during the pitch invasion from Celtic fans, rather than brought to a close on the official’s terms.

If that conclusion is shared by those conducting the inquiry, then it could potentially result in a points deduction for the Bhoys, or even see Derek McInnes’ side awarded the trophy retrospectively.

Celtic’s victory over Hearts secured their fifth consecutive Premiership title, but Wyness feels that the story surrounding the pitch invasion is still far from over.

Keith Wyness: Don Robertson audio raises major ‘question marks’

Aberdeen’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the referee’s audio has left serious “question marks” regarding how the game ended.

Robertson can be heard suggesting that Hearts were happy to leave the pitch as fans flooded on from the stands, but Wyness feels that it cannot be used as concrete evidence to suggest that the game concluded.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, he made it clear that he feels that the pitch invasion ended the game, rather than the referee.

“I’ve listened to the audio a few times and I still don’t hear the referee. All I can hear is him saying, Hearts are happy to go off. It’s not necessarily the end of the game properly,” he said.

“To me, the game was still abandoned, and I still think there are some open issues here. There’s a full inquiry still active, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an outcome in terms of Hearts.

“I’ve still got question marks about how that game was ended. It was a pitch invasion that ended that game. It was not the referee’s whistle, so it’s not the correct way. I’m afraid the video and the audio left more questions than answers.”

Could Celtic still be stripped of league title?

Wyness previously told Football Insider that a suspended points deduction is Celtic’s most likely punishment for the pitch invasion, which wouldn’t take effect until the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

He suggested that if it is determined that the game was abandoned, rather than the full-time whistle blown, the title should be handed to Hearts retrospectively, in order to set a precedent for fans’ behaviour moving forward.

However, while Wyness was clear at the time that it was a far-fetched outcome, he now thinks it could still be a possibility with the inquiry ongoing.

A positive outcome for Hearts would surely lead to that result, as any punishment issued directly to Celtic for 2026-27 would come with little benefit to the Jambos.

Another solution that has been suggested in recent weeks is the idea of the game being replayed, but former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has since told Football Insider that is an “impossibility.”
