Celtic could pull off ‘Fantastic’ coup as approach made for Howe – pundit

Celtic could pull off a “fantastic” coup by appointing Eddie Howe as manager, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker and self-confessed Hoops fan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 43-year-old would bring “fresh ideas” to Parkhead following Neil Lennon’s resignation.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic have made initial contact with the ex-Bournemouth boss to assess his interest in the post.

It is understood while Howe would be interested, he is keeping his options open with one eye on a potential Premier League job.

The former defender has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth following relegation from the Premier League last season.

Whelan insisted Howe would bring the best out of the players at Parkhead.

Asked if Howe was the sort of manager Celtic needed, Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Yeah, absolutely. Thank god. Thank god someone has actually seen sense.

I think a change of direction, a change of style. Fresh ideas is what I’ve been saying at Celtic. I think the players will become better players with Eddie Howe there.

“I’m surprised that no one’s taken a little chip at him yet outside of Scotland. I’m very happy if that’s the direction they’re looking.

“I think that’s the right direction with Celtic. I think he’s a fantastic manager, great ideas. He’s fresh, he’s very intelligent and he’s got that know-how with younger players as well.

“He’s not that old himself. He knows how to man-manage players, he knows how to get the best out of players. I think that would be a great move for Celtic if they can get it signed, sealed and delivered.”
