Celtic could sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton this summer, according to Paul Robinson.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 35-year-old is a “top-class, reliable” keeper who would be “a great signing” for the Hoops.
The number one spot has been an area of weakness at Parkhead since Fraser Forster’s departure at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.
Vasilis Barkas, Conor Hazard and Scott Bain have all held the gloves at stages this season, with the latter currently John Kennedy’s first choice.
Robinson is adamant the next permanent manager of the club will look to sign a new number one and suggested Heaton would be interested if approached.
“Whoever comes in at Celtic, one of their first tasks will be to sign a new number one,” he told Football Insider.
“Tom Heaton is a possibility. Logistically, would he be willing to move to Glasgow? I’m not sure. He might be very settled with his family.
“It would be a huge opportunity for him to play at one of the biggest European clubs though. Could he turn that opportunity down?
“It would be a great signing for Celtic. Heaton would be a great signing for any club. He is a top-class, reliable goalkeeper who would be perfect for Celtic next season.”
Heaton, who celebrates his 35th birthday today, has lost his number one spot at Villa Park to Emiliano Martinez this season.
The Athletic claim the England international is considering leaving the club in the summer, with his contract due to expire at the end of June.
