Sources: Celtic agree terms with Yuki Kobayashi as deal close

Celtic have agreed personal terms with Vissel Kobe defender Yuki Kobayashi, sources have told Football Insider.

The Glasgow giants are working on a deal to land the centre-back in January as they close in on their fifth Japanese signing.

Celtic have agreed a contract with Kobayashi and his representatives and are now ready to finalise deal as his current agreement expires at the end of January.

The Japanese top-tier outfit have made Kobayashi a key member of their team after graduating from their youth academy, for whom he initially joined in 2018.

He’s since had loan spells at second tier Machida Zelvia and top-flight Yokohama before breaking into Vissel’s first team at the start of 2020-21.

Celtic have set their sights on adding a new centre-back with the potential to develop under Ange Postecoglu.

The club have raided the Japanese market four other times since the Australian took over as manager and three of the signings – Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate – have been big successes.

The fourth, Yosuke Ideguchi, also joined last January but he has failed to make an impact, mainly due to injury.

Kobayashi is represented by the same agency as Ideguchi, which is also shared by Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Celtic target is out of contract at the end of January, which has opened the door for a deal to be struck.

Football Insider revealed last month that the Scottish giants had set aside “significant cash” for a January midfield signing following their transfer market success of 10 months ago.
