Celtic fans troll Robbie Savage on Twitter after Southampton knocked out by Hapoel

By Emma Sanders

Celtic fans reacted with amusement on Twitter after Southampton were knocked out of the Europa League following a 1-1 draw against Hapoel Beer Sheva.

The Israeli outfit were relatively unknown in England prior to this season and after Celtic suffered a 2-0 defeat against them in August, with Robbie Savage claiming their European opponents were only a “pub team”.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had previously thrashed them 5-2 in round one of the Champions League playoff but Hapoel replied in ambitious fashion just five days later.

Southampton’s draw on Thursday evening amused Celtic fans ,who were keen to remind Savage of his comments and stress the fact Hapoel are clearly better than most made out.

A late stoppage time goal from Virgil Van Dijk meant Southampton avoided a hugely embarrassing defeat but the team’s apparent lack of ambition proved costly.

The Saints needed either a goalless draw or a win to progress through to the knock-out stages and though they had a few chances in the first half, Southampton seemed content to play out for the draw.

It came as a huge surprise when Maor Bar Buzaglo netted a goal for the visitors in the 78th minute after a mistake from the Saints’ defence.

Celtic supporters took to social media to troll former Leicester and Birmingham midfielder Savage.
